On COVID-19: Is It Now Safe to Visit an Aging Parent?
As the COVID-19 restrictions gradually begin to ease, questions about whether it’s safe to visit your aging loved one may be at the forefront of your mind.
Though there is no government guidance set in place about visiting elderly loved ones, you must weigh the risks first before going for a visit. This is especially true if your loved one has certain medical conditions or is receiving palliative services in California.
To minimize the risk of exposing your loved one to the coronavirus, some of the precautions you can take are listed below.
- Avoid bringing your children to the visit or talk to them about safety precautions beforehand.
- Wear protective gear such as face masks and eyewear. Consider wearing gloves if you’re going to be touching groceries.
- Take social distancing very seriously even if both of you are wearing masks and protective gear.
- Avoid prolonged exposure (more than 15 minutes). If you want to linger, make sure to stay six feet apart.
- If your loved one is receiving hospice care in Burbank, California, opt to talk through the window instead of going in.
At Bonum Hospice Services, we know how difficult it is to not be with an aging loved one during difficult times. That’s why we make sure to provide compassionate hospice and palliative care to our clients. We want them to feel comforted even if they’re far from their family.
